Active Kelowna

Kelowna residents take pride in their active lifestyles. In the early morning you can see them out for a jog, run or walk. In the afternoon they enjoy a round of Golf, take a dip in the lake Okanagan, go hiking/biking and in the evening play soccer, volleyball or one of the other interesting activities.

There are several agencies and organizations in Kelowna which are dedicated to address healthy living through policy or environmental change. One such organization is KickStart Kelowna. They organize various events in Kelowna, have partnership with other concerns to promote good health and try to create awareness about the benefits of physical activity. Kick Start Kelowna is a part of a 5 year program focused on increasing levels of physical activity in our community by 20% by 2010. Check out a few funded projects under Kick Start Kelowna initiative:

1.Everybody Gets to Play : The purpose of this project is to increase access to and participation in recreation opportunities by low-income families and their children and agencies actively involved are:

Central Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs
Regional District of Central Okanagan
Kelowna Family YMCA-YWCA
Cultural Groups
Kelowna Community Schools
Sport Groups and leagues
City of Kelowna, Sport and Recreation

2. Food runners program : It is a is a perishable food recovery program, designed to increase the amount of healthy, nutritious food for clients of the Kelowna Food Bank and those of its partner agencies. The program uses a refrigerated van to recover nutritious perishable food nearing expiry dates from local grocery stores and excess food items from caterers, restaurant and hotels. Participating agencies include:

Kelowna Auto Dealers Assoc.
Orchard City Lions Club

3.Healthy Food and Beverage Choices Task Force : This program is focussed at increasing the amount of healthy food and beverage that are served at City of Kelowna, Interior Health, and Regional District food and beverage outlets (concessions and vending machines).
