Christmas Gift Ideas

Chances are, you’re either ecstatic about the coming holiday season and counting down the days to shiny lights and plenty of ho-ho’s—or wishing you could escape for three weeks to Grinch mountain! Wherever you may lie on the Noel scale, it’s likely that the commercialism that surrounds the Christmas season is adding unwelcome stress to your otherwise generous outlook. Combined with the unsteady economic times, it can be difficult to be cheerful about the prospect of giving. Why not consider making a gift for someone? Home-made gift-giving doesn’t have to be scary, especially when you consider that the recipient will cherish the time it took you to gather and arrange the goods just for them!

Here are some ideas, both traditional and unique, for you to consider this year. For those of you who are creative and crafty, the old “gift basket” standby is the place to start.

What chocolate lover wouldn’t get weak in the knees at seeing a basket filled with double chocolate cookies, chocolate-covered popcorn, chocolate almonds or cherries and of course, a jar of home-made hot cocoa mix with marshmallows and a candy cane? For the Italian foodie on your list, how about a basket or colander filled with fresh pasta, tomato sauce, garlic spread, cheese and a bottle of wine?

Other ideas are the bath/body basket, the candle-lovers basket, (or how about the just plain old “lovers” basket let your imagination run wild with that one!) An offshoot of the gift basket idea is the “jar” gift. Just layer a mason jar with the dry ingredients of your favourite cookie or muffin recipe. Then, place a swatch of Christmassy material on the top with the recipe attached. Replace the lid and tie a beautiful red or green bow around it. Voila! A gift from the heart that’s sure to keep your friend or family member warm on those chilly winter days ahead.

Gift baskets don’t have to be traditional though. For the givers more inclined toward humorous gifting, how about a Survival Kit? Nothing says “I care” better than a life-enhancing collection of items meant to cheer a friend and get a laugh! For the student, fill a milk crate with Kraft Dinner, packages of Ramen noodles, note pads, highlighters, desk lamp light bulbs and a phone card or cell phone minutes. For the forever single guy on your list, try a “Bachelor’s Survival Kit.” Fill a laundry basket with detergent, a laundry guide, a cookbook of easy meals, an iron, room deodorizer, cleaning supplies, take-out pizza coupons and of course, beer. The “Christmas Survival Kit” would see anyone safely through the season: a stocking filled with Tylenol, extra scotch tape, Slim Fast, herbal tea, recipes for turkey leftovers, an appointment or date book, some bubble bath and a CD of relaxing music. Being frugal and cheerful can actually be a pretty good time, so celebrate with real spirit this year.
