Dragon Boat Festival, Kelowna

One of the most popular events celebrated in K-town is the 'Dragon boat Festival.' The term 'Dragon Boat' is used for a very long and narrow human powered boat used in the team paddling sport or Dragon boat racing which originated in China.

In China, Dragon boat races are traditionally held to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan who was a very famous patriotic poet from southern Chu during the Warring States Period. His works are mostly found in an anthology of poetry known as Chu Ci. In Kelowna Dragon Boat Festival draws several dragon boat teams, fierce competition, thousands of spectators, lot of excitement, thrill and fun.

The festival is marked by exciting dragon boat races and inspiring teams combined with impressive community participation, live entertainment, cultural shows, delicious food, beverages and memorable activities for all ages. The Kelowna Dragon Boat Festival is well known not only in Canada but all over the world. I am not an active participant in this event but surely a keen spectator and am eagerly waiting for 2007's 'Dragon Boat Festival' which is scheduled for September 14-16.
