Firefighters raise funds

On Saturday, Sept 26th 2009 firefighters from Kamloops, Vernon, Kelowna, West Kelowna and Penticton are joining hands to hold a region-wide boot drive to raise funds and awareness for people affected by muscular dystrophy. Last year, firefighters in B.C. and the Yukon raised more than $668,000 on behalf of people affected by muscular dystrophy.

Muscular Dystrophy is a group of herditary and genetic muscle diseases that weaken the muscles that move the human body. Muscular dystrophies are characterized by progressive skeletal muscle weakness, defects in muscle proteins, and the death of muscle cells and tissue.

During this boot drive fundraising event, local firefighters will go into the community and collect donations from the public, using a firefighter boot. Thompson-Okanagan firefighters can be found on Saturday at local Wal Mart and Costco stores, and at area malls and grocery stores.

So, if you see a firefighter at a local store on Saturday, Sept 26th then be generous and do whatever you can to support this noble cause.
