New Kelowna Bridge

bc-080526-bennett-bridge-2.jpg

After all the festivities this past weekend, the new Bridge across Okanagan Lake connecting Kelowna and Westbank called William R. Bennett Bridge(named after former BC premier) opened on May 26th 2008. A friend of mine, who lives in Westbank, was quite excited to be at work on Monday morning and couldn't stop telling us about this magnificient new bridge. Almost 36 people got a chance to be a part of history by becoming famous firsts (like first pedestrians, first cyclists, first motorcyclists etc) on new William R. Bennett Bridge.

Although the new bridge is open for traffic, all five lanes will become operational in a few days. The original Okanagan Lake Floating Bridge was opened on July 19,1958. The new bridge opened almost 108 days earlier than the scheduled date and costed about $144 million. Big thanks to the numerous workers who did their best to turn the bridge project into reality.
