Reducing homelessness in Kelowna

A big round of applause for ministry of housing and social development for their new initiative to reduce homlessness in Kelowna. A new $4.2M - supportive housing has opened in Kelowna at 2071 Gordon Drive which is a 11-unit, three- storey development funded by the Province and community partners and includes eight two-bedroom units, two three-bedroom units and a one-bedroom unit with wheelchair accessibility. There are also amenity rooms and administrative areas on the main floor.

For this project, the Real Estate Foundation of BC provided a $250,000 grant and the City of Kelowna provided a Rental Housing Grant of $64,522. The Society of Hope has provided $145,000 through fundraising and donations, and will operate and manage the development. A resource co-ordinator will work with local agencies to support residents in locating and moving into more permanent and independent living situations.

As per Mayor of Kelowna, Sharon Shepherd:

This short-term housing development is a great addition to our City and is an important step towards solving the issue of homelessness. Our women and children in need now have more access to stable, secure housing that will enable them to break down barriers and move towards greater independence and permanent housing.

It brings smile on my face to know that government is taking positive steps towards providing more housing options for women and children at risk of homlessnes in Kelowna and neighboring areas even during these tough economic times.
