Looking for a recreational lake near Kelowna where you can go to have a relaxing summer weekend? Well, why not visit Wood Lake which is immediately adjacent to Kalamalka Lake (connected to it by Oyama canal.) Do not confuse this one with the Wood Lake which is located in Fraser Valley of British Columbia. This Wood Lake is actually located between Oyama and Winfield, about 20 km from downtown Vernon,BC and is well known for its Kokanee and rainbow trout fishing. No doubt, fishing enthusiasts love it.
It is one of the most easily accessible lakes in the Lake Country region because it runs along side a major highway i.e. Highway 97. Access to the lake is best found along the highway at any of the pull outs with gravel boat launches. It can also be accessed from the community of Harrison Mills. Take the Morris Valley Road north and then onto the good gravel Harrison West logging road for approximately 23 km. (14.3 mi.). There are marked signs to the lake. Total distance from Harrison Mills is about 31.3 km. (19.4 mi.).
Although you can notice a few resorts, stores and other types of accommodations along the shores of the lake, it is mostly used by the locals. Besides fishing, there are several other activities that can be enjoyed at Wood lake like boating, canoeing, water skiing and swimming. Water Skiiers use Wood Lake's beaches as their launching points. There are about 4 beaches here and they are usually 3-4 degrees warmer than Kalamalka Lake so you can definitely get a chance to work on that tan. The north end of the lake has some of the best places to spend an afternoon.
So pack your picnic bag and have a relaxing day on the shores of Wood Lake.
